What can I expect in Otaru?

Otaru is mostly a peaceful city and its tourist attractions are very well-liked by local visitors and vacationers. Otaru has a lovely historic cityscape with a rich history dating back to its port trading days. Many of the charming shops, cafes, and restaurants are accessible by foot along the beautiful canal, which has been excellently restored, serving as the city's spine. Otaru is also very well known for its glass manufacturing. If you enjoy nature, you must visit Asari, located in the southeast centre of Otaru, ideal for outdoorsy people!

How do I get to Otaru?
Fortunately, there are many options to get to Otaru. You can take the train from New Chitose Airport, which takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes, this journey is free for holders of the Japan Rail Pass. From the same location, you can also take the bus first to Sapporo station and then the Chuo bus to Otaru station. For those who would rather enjoy a more private journey, you can also rent a car and get to Otaru via the Do-o expressway and Sasson expressway, which takes 1 hour and 10 minutes only. If you're renting a car, you can drive straight to the best hotel in Hokkaido, and freshen up before exploring begins! 

Travelling within Otaru
Getting to places in Otaru is not a challenge, as it is a small city and the prominent sightseeing spots are within walking distance of one another. You can discover some of the less popular locations, narrower streets, and fascinating structures on foot that you might miss while travelling by car or even by bus. It is quite simple and enjoyable to stroll through Otaru's city centre and take in all the city has to offer, such as its historic cityscape, a variety of stores, and eateries. If you'd like to travel by bus, Otaru's Stroller's Bus travels between the main sightseeing spots, costing 240 yen for adults and 120 yes for children, per ride. There is a one-day bus costing 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children. The Chuo Bus and other regional buses serve places which are further out of the city, with fares starting at 210 yen and rising in accordance with the distance covered.

When do I visit Otaru?
Luckily for you, Otaru is stunning throughout the year and seasons and boasts lovely weather all year long. You can take relaxing strolls along the canal and beach during the summer, and in the spring, you can take in the stunning sakura and fall foliage. Wintertime in Otaru is the most popular among many travellers. Snowfall in some regions of Hokkaido is quite heavy, Otaru is certainly transformed into a winter wonderland, and consequently, many of the small businesses construct charming snow sculptures and figures outdoors, which is a pleasure to witness. However, if you plan to visit Otaru during the winter, book your accommodation well in advance to avoid any disappointments.
