No one really knew anything about Koh Phangan before the 1990s – the occasional tourist would visit the island and find a small hut on the beach; that was all the island offered back then. But now, the island has become one of the most visited islands in the world, all thanks to the full moon party. The monthly average number of visits is 5,000, and the number keeps growing larger. So, if you’ve decided to visit the island, here’s what you can experience on Koh Phangan after dinner.

Full moon party

One of the best things to do on Koh Phangan is to attend the full moon parties. You could say that this is the main draw for party people that fill up properties such as Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas. These parties have a very casual vibe; you can wear a top and jeans for the party. The party is usually held on the beach or near a jungle, with a combination of techno and house music to rouse the crowd. The success of the full moon party led to the initiation of other parties like the black moon and half-moon parties.

The Jam Bar

This is one of the popular sundowner spots on Koh Phangan. This is essentially a hut made from thatch, bamboo, and wood. There’s unending music, and you can enjoy some of the local delights at reasonable prices. This is also where you can meet some talented musicians. What’s more, The Jam Bar offers taxi and scooter rentals.

Rasta Baby

This is one of the best bar restaurants in Thailand. The Rasta Baby chain has restaurants in south Thailand, including Koh Phangan, Patong, and Koh Phayam. Decorated with Bob Marley portraits and green, yellow, and red Rastafarian flags, the restaurant features a quirky and relaxing ambience. This is one of the best reggae bars in town, and it serves delicious Thai food.

Loi Lay Floating Bar

A great place to unwind while sipping on a drink and listening to modern music, Loi Lay Floating Bar is an excellent venue, especially if you like house music. Only open on Sundays, the bar presents local DJs and talented musicians to entertain those who visit. Bear in mind that if you visit during the high season, the bar will be packed with people.

Sand Bar

Another reggae bar on the island, Sand Bar is a bit more refined than the other bars you find in the area. You can drop by any time you feel like having a drink, but the best time to visit is in the evening when the DJ tunes up a notch with modern music. The place also has a tattoo parlour.

Black Moon Party

This is a monthly event that turns Baan Tai Beach into a beehive stirred by modern dance beats. The first Black Moon Party was held in 1999 and was launched by Blackmoon Culture. This has become one of the biggest tourist draws. The party also has an element of art, something other parties do not have.

Half Moon Party

This is a much smaller occasion than the Full Moon Party. Even so, the party has become one of the best night-time attractions for tourists. The venue is found about 2 km from the southern coast of the island; the party is hosted in a small jungle clearing. The lively and dizzying atmosphere coupled with progressive music is a tonic for those who suffer from the lack of chances to dance and let go. You’ll find that there are two half-moon parties every month. The party is also graced by local talents, including fireworks.
