Ranked among the world's most breathtaking travel destinations, the Maldivian archipelago is the perfect short-stay beach Mecca for the masses. Made up of more than 1200 tiny islands, the country offers holidaymakers a wide range of activities and attractions. From exploring the island nation's bustling capital to making the most of the stunning beaches and water sports opportunities, here's a 5-day itinerary for your trip to the paradise isles.

Day One

While it may seem counter-intuitive, it is better to spend the first day on holiday in the Maldivian capital where the international airport also happens to be located. While most tourists jet off to their resort bases in the outer atolls without giving Male a second thought, it is actually prudent and cost-effective to explore the city's main highlights before moving on to a resort island for the holiday proper. Those who touch down at Velana International Airport will also find that seaplane and speedboat transfers are not available in the evening so it's best to spend your first night and the following day in Male. Home to the National Museum and other cultural landmarks such as the Grand Friday Mosque, Male will serve as the perfect introduction to the Maldives. Grab breakfast at the Royal Garden Café before setting off on a cultural tour of the city, which must include pit stops at Sultan Park, Republic Square and the many presidential palaces in town. Pop by local boutiques and markets such as Chaandhanee Magu before sundown so that you can catch a speedboat out of Male.

Day Two

After settling in at the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives or any other base of your choice, it is time to head out to Mihiri Island for a spot of snorkelling. Maldives 5-star resort amenities may vary but nearly every resort organises snorkelling tours around the archipelago so travelling to Mihiri Island will be as easy as chartering a speedboat. After enjoying the underwater coral reefs and the marine life occupying the periphery of the island, visitors can set off on an island-hopping tour. Those who wish to spend the entire day out at sea can also opt for a sunset cruise towards evening where dolphins are likely to trail your catamaran or yacht.

Day Three

It is crucial to devote the third day of your trip to scuba diving activities and then unwind in style at a resort spa. Travel to Huvanhendhoo Island in the South Ari Atoll for its excellent diving conditions and the lagoon teeming with colourful fish species. Surrounded by sandbanks, the island is also the perfect venue to enjoy a sandbank picnic before winding down after the day's diving activities at a spa. The resort islands in the vicinity are home to more than a few award-winning spas and healing centres that employ Ayurvedic remedies to soothe tired muscles and other aches.

Day Four

The day before your last day in the country should be dedicated to indulging in some of the once-in-a-lifetime activities accessible in the archipelago. Kick-start your morning with a whale-watching tour where there's also a high possibility of spotting dolphins and sea turtles before winning and dining at one of the Maldives' three underwater restaurants. The Ithaa Restaurant, Subsix, and S.E.A Restaurant stand out as exceptional dining destinations. For those who prefer an enchanting cinematic experience, outdoor cinemas are available at various resorts, as well as the cosy setting of an over-water bungalow, where you can relish a timeless Hollywood classic by the beach.

Last Day

Before heading back to Male to catch the flight home, visitors can spend a few hours on Veligandu Island, which is a retail Mecca where souvenirs and keepsakes are available. Famed for its shell jewellery and pearl accessories, the charming little trinkets for sale at Veligandu Island are some of the best in the country.
