Often described as one of Asia's most vibrant capitals, Kuala Lumpur is a dynamic tourist hotspot in the region. Welcoming countless business travellers and holidaymakers, there is plenty to see and do in this bustling capital of Malaysia. Famed for its traffic jams, avoiding delays, and travelling efficiently in the city does take some local know-how. Here are some helpful hints that you can use to get around Kuala Lumpur with ease.

1. Secure a Strategic Base

Regardless of the duration of your stay, all visitors should aim to find conveniently situated serviced apartments in KL. Not only will it make sightseeing activities a seamless experience but also eliminate unnecessary stress from your travel itinerary. Whether you choose the Ascott Kuala Lumpur or any other property, ensure that your accommodation provider is located close to the heart of the city or its main attractions. This is especially true if one intends to visit the Malaysian capital during the peak tourist season. Travellers who are unable to find rooms in a strategic part of town should instead aim to find a base close to MRT stations and bus stops.

2. LRT and MRT

Arguably the most popular and most efficient way to get around Kuala Lumpur is to hop on the LRT or the MRT rail transport networks. The LRT is divided into two lines named the Ampang LRT line and the Kelana Jaya LRT line, which cover most of the city. Operational from 6 am to midnight, trains are available every 3-15 minutes. The fares are unbelievably low on both LRT and the MRT although the MRT covers more ground. These rides allow locals and tourists to not only travel around the city centre but also the outer fringes of KL. Tickets for MRT rides can be purchased at MRT Stations.3. KTM CommuterAs an alternative rail service, the KTM Commuter covers longer distances than the LRT or the MRT. Travelling as far as Singapore and Thailand is perhaps the best way for those based in neighbouring nations to reach KL.

4. Taxis

Tourists should avoid using taxi services in KL if they are on a budget as it is one of the more costly means of transport available. Most taxis in KL are also unmetered, which means that you will have to haggle down the price of a ride with the driver. Families and groups can book a reliable and metered taxi through apps the likes of Mula, MyCar and EzCab or Grab and avoid the hassle of negotiating the cost of the journey.

5. Bus

Also known as MyRapid, bus services are also accessible for budget travellers who really wish to get around by the least expensive means of travel available. Buses in Kuala Lumpur are unreliable in terms of timing and punctuality and thus may not be the best option for business travellers and riding a bus during rush hour can be a nightmare for the uninitiated. But those with time to spare can choose to use bus services as it is truly the most budget-friendly alternative to all other transport links.

6. Car

RentalWhile it may only be accessible to those who possess an international driving license, renting a car can be a liberating way to get around. It is crucial to avoid rush hour during the work week as heading out during this time can be a nightmare for locals as well as tourists. Using an app such as Waze for navigation assistance is also a must as you will find it difficult to make your way through the city as a tourist.
