Golf is a sport that prides itself on patience, practice and exemplary posture. Part of what separates the good from the great boils down to having a more than decent golf swing. This way, you give yourself every opportunity to not just stay ahead of the competition but off those dreaded bunkers as well. Penned down below is a step-by-step guide to perfect your golf swing.

Maintain good posture

A golf swing is not necessarily about speed or strength as it is about having a good posture to rely on when out on the fairways of your favourite golf course. In terms of working towards building posture, always get into the habit of standing with your feet shoulder width apart and ensure that your back is straight. Just before your golf club makes contact with the ball, maintain a neutral stance and bend ever so slightly at the hips and knees. Know that your body weight must be evenly distributed across your feet and your arms must hang naturally.

Alignment is a crucial aspect of a golf swing

Live by the mantra that consistent alignment can result in consistent accuracy which is a trait that you will need to develop if you are to harbour thoughts of becoming the next Tiger Woods or Rory Mcllroy. Excellent alignment is a prerequisite to hitting the ball to your intended target. A cardinal rule to follow is to have your hips, feet and shoulders parallel to your target line. Envision drawing a straight-line beginning from your feet to the target line and make sure the clubface is aligned accordingly.

 Practice a good grip

When it comes to holding your golf club, a common mistake that a majority of golfers make is to either grasp their club too tightly or loosely. With the former, you will experience reduced control and somewhat of a restricted swing while in the case of the latter, you are at risk of your club slipping from your hands which can significantly impact the swing and speed at which the ball travels. In order to enjoy a good grip, practice holding your club to a point where you are confident of maintaining control and avoid squeezing too hard.

Work on developing a smooth backswing and follow-through

Never be hurried or rushed when it comes to your backswing as such an approach can lead to poor judgment and inconsistent shots. As a rule of thumb, never compromise on the value of playing to a steady pace and importantly, focus on your arms as well as your shoulders. If a right-handed golfer, then have your left arm straight and maintain a 90-degree angle between the left arm and club shaft at the top of your backswing. With such a method, you will be able to generate sufficient power. Additionally, your follow-through is a crucial part of your golf swing and requires much attention and practice as the backswing. Effective weight transfer from the back foot to the front is essential. Likewise, initiate a rotation of the hips and shoulders which will help in your power game. Also, have your eyes on the ball as you strike it and keep your head still and remember that your lower body must always lead the way towards achieving a well-balanced and high finish.

Choose a facility where you could hone your skills

Having the benefit of professional know-how and facilities to make excellent use of will be a stepping stone on the road to becoming a keen golfer who understands the finer points of his or her game. For example, if searching for a golf resort, Sri Lanka provides ease of access to Victoria Golf Resort which is managed by John Keells Properties. Considered one of the world’s best golf courses, this 18-hole golf resort offers conducive conditions for both the amateur and skilled golfer to fine-tune their swing and develop a sound game.
