As one of Asia's lesser-known and more remote travel hubs, Laos is a land that's shrouded in myth and mystery. As the travelling masses come to discover the benefits of visiting this less popular corner of Asia, one must also grapple with the question of knowing what to pack for a trip to the country. Although most travellers will stick to the dry season, there are benefits to exploring Laos during the wetter months of the year. Here's what to pack for your rainy getaway in Laos.

1. The Essentials

These are the items you must store in a secure and dry location as you won't be able to get far without these necessities. First off, make sure your passport is safely packed and is valid for at least 6 months after the end of your Laos holiday. Travel insurance papers and your National ID should also be packed along with copies of the same. Driver's Licenses should also be on hand if you intend to drive a motorbike or any other vehicle during your time in Laos. Carrying prescriptions for medications you must take daily is another must as purchasing meds can be difficult without these slips. Don't forget to pack a solid and sturdy backpack made from a water-proof material for everyday use. Keep at least one of your credit cards outside of the wallet and in your luggage in case of theft or loss.

2. Clothing

With rainy conditions being prevalent for most of the year, Laos is one of the few countries where cotton and lightweight clothing will not suffice. It is best to choose performance clothing or workout tops and slacks made from synthetic materials for the trip as these will dry faster and also absorb sweat when engaging in outdoor activities. Short-sleeved tops are ideal unless you intend to engage in outdoor excursions where bugs and creepy crawlies are a factor. Take at least one conservative outfit for temple visits and make sure your knees and shoulders are covered. The clothes you select for a trip to Laos should be light-coloured to cope with the humidity, so avoid dark colours that tend to absorb heat. A waterproof jacket and a raincoat are also necessary in addition to sporty shorts.

3. Footwear

There's no need to carry more than two types of shoes or footwear for a holiday in Laos but it is important to make your choices count. Travellers who intend to hike or go on long treks should pack some hiking boots or sneakers with socks as it is difficult to walk in uneven terrain without proper footwear. Sandals and a pair of flip-flops will suffice for those who are heading straight for the beaches and the rivers. Couples honeymooning at Avani+ Luang Prabang, or any similar Luang Prabang Laos hotels, however, should pack a pair of heels and formal shoes if they wish to dine at a fine dining restaurant during their stay.

4. Accessories

Travellers who wish to enjoy the great outdoors or set up camp in the wilderness might want to carry a sleeping bag as these are quite costly to buy and difficult to find in Laos. Suntan lotion is another essential apart from a wide-brimmed hat and mosquito spray, which will come in handy even in air-conditioned rooms in Laos. Ear plugs are another must-have for travellers who plan on using local buses and trains to get around Laos as it can get quite loud inside public transport vehicles in the country.  A travel towel and a good book or eReader will also come in handy on these long journeys. A small emergency medical kit comprised of antibiotic sprays, antacids, stomach-settling medications, and Band-Aids must also be part of your luggage.
