Beijing is the capital of China and one of the top tourist destinations in the country. There are many wonderful things to see in this historic city, from ancient structures and buildings to cultural landmarks, shops and parks. The best way to experience Beijing is to plan a tour around the city. This will allow you to cover all the must-see sights, find the best places to stay and ensure that your trip is a success.

Decide on the Duration of Your Stay

First, decide on how long you plan to stay. You will need at least 3 days to explore the highlights of the city. However, for a more immersive experience, consider adding an extra two days to your itinerary. This way, you can enjoy its main attractions, culture and history at a more leisurely pace.

Find the Best Times to Visit

The best times to visit Beijing are during Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October). The weather will generally be pleasant during these periods with clear skies and mild temperatures. It is also less busy and crowded, and you can avoid the peak season in Summer when the prices are higher. If you don’t mind going in Winter, the city becomes a truly beautiful sight with a blanket of snow covering the streets.

Choose A Place to Stay

Next, you will need to find accommodation. Depending on your budget, you could settle on a hostel or a Beijing luxury hotel. The neighbourhood you pick should have close access to the major attractions in the city, while also being secure. The best locations include Quianmen Area in Central Beijing, Xicheng Hutong - home to top hotels such as Pan Pacific Beijing, and Chaoyang - with its modern buildings and shops.

Explore the Forbidden City

The Forbidden City is one of the main attractions in China, situated in the very centre of Beijing. This ancient palace complex housed a series of Chinese Emperors for 600 years. The complex is now a museum and visitors can walk through the gardens, pavilions and palace interior to gain an insight into China’s colourful past.

Go Hiking in The Great Wall

Every traveller to China should visit the incredible Great Wall – one of the wonders of the world. While it is impossible to cover its entire length, certain sections can be explored, including Mutianyu, Badaling, and Jiankou. Start with Mutianyu as it is one of the best-preserved and least crowded sections, with great scenery. It is best to spend 3-4 hours here.

Visit the Temple of Heaven

This cultural landmark in Beijing showcases imperial architectural styles, with the famous circular main temple being known for its distinct design. The Temple was once a place where the emperors would come to worship and pray, to ask for a good harvest.

Stroll Through Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is an iconic location situated close to the Forbidden City. It is one of the largest squares in the world, and a symbol of modern China. Visitors can walk along this historic landmark and view Mao Zedong’s mausoleum along with other monuments.

View the Royal Gardens in the Summer Palace

This sprawling park was once the summer residence of the Chinese emperors. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site that draws in large crowds of tourists. Known for its beautiful gardens, lakes, and pavilions, it offers a respite for travellers to relax in picturesque natural surroundings.

See the Hutong Area

The Hutongs are historic alleyways in the city, which were traditionally linked together in ancient times. There are over 6000 Hutongs with courtyard residences. Many have now been converted into shops and restaurants - but you will also find many locals living here and have the opportunity to observe their way of life.

Try Traditional Chinese Cuisine

Beijing has many high-class restaurants, serving both local and international cuisine. Your trip will not be complete without a food tour of the best traditional dishes in the city. World-famous Peking Roasted Duck is one of the top dishes you need to try, along with other delicious items that you won’t find elsewhere.
