Considered one of Asia's most family-oriented cities, Singapore is as straight-laced a nation as one can find in this dynamic part of the world. Home to some of the most popular theme parks and leisure facilities in the region, there are plenty of ways to make a family getaway to the Lion City an engaging and exciting affair. From deciding when to travel to creating a practical itinerary, here are some tips to help families plan the ultimate family vacation to sunny Singapore.

Timing the Holiday

The first step in planning a family trip to the Lion City is selecting the travel dates. Although Singapore is considered a year-round holiday hotspot, there are particular times of the year when a getaway to the island is not ideal for those travelling with children. This includes the monsoon season from November to January when the country experiences thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. This is why the period between June and August is deemed the ideal time to head to Singapore. Sunny and dry, this is the period when Singapore experiences low humidity levels so outdoor activities will also be less strenuous. As a small city-state, families need not spend weeks in Singapore to explore its best highlights. Travelogues often recommend a 5-6 day getaway as sufficient to uncover Singapore's top attractions.

Finding the Perfect Base

As in most holiday destinations, not all Singapore luxury suites are created equal and families must find a base that's both comfortable and convenient. Whether it's the Grand Park City Hall or any other base hotel, the ideal family hotel must occupy a strategic location close to the island's main point of interest and public transport links. Families intending to visit during the peak tourist season from June to August must make early reservations as the best accommodation providers are the first to be booked up.

Getting Around

The Singapore metro system is the most efficient means of transport available in the country. Although there are equally reliable taxi and bus services accessible to locals and tourists, hopping on the metro is the fastest and safest way to get from Point A to Point B. Families will need to purchase EZ-Link cards for the duration of their trip and top of the value of these easy-to-use travel passes as they go.

Must-Visit Highlights

Although Singapore boasts many family-friendly attractions and activity bases, there are certain key landmarks that should be part of everyone's travel itinerary. This includes the Gardens by the Bay and Sentosa Island where not one but three stunning beaches also await families. It's also important to set aside a day or two to exploring Universal Studios Singapore and its thematic zones as some of the best rides and rollercoasters are found here. Singapore's free splash centres also deserve a spot on family travel plans as cooling off can be an adventure at KidzPlay at NEX Skygarden, the IMM Water Play Park and Happy Park in Waterway Point.

Shopping and Dining

Described as a foodie's dream come true, Singapore is a great place for families to dip into delicacies from various parts of the world. Little India and Chinatown are some of the best spots for families with a passion for all things culinary. Clarke Quay is another dining hub that's revered by locals and expats alike as some of the finest waterfront restaurants on the island are located here. Shopping sprees must also be an integral part of a Singaporean holiday. In addition to the ION Orchard, Ngee Ann Centre and the plush malls down Orchard Road, families should also check out the local bazaars and shopping centres in Chinatown.
