Located by Taihu Lake, Yuantouzhu is a peninsula called Turtle Head Island. The island is named Turtle Head due to the number of rocks that jut out into the lake, looking like turtles swimming in the lake. Yuantouzhu has an abundance of clear water and beautiful natural scenery. The island is one of the best viewpoints in the region.

Appreciate the natural beauty of the island


Yuantouzhu is a popular attraction thanks to its gorgeous scenery that sweeps across Taihu Lake, China’s third largest freshwater lake. There’s a park on the island which harnesses the beauty of Taihu Lak, and there are buildings here, located sparsely in between trees and rocks.During the Republican Period, celebrities and the rich came here to build gardens that imitated the style of the gardens in North China.Once you get to the island, the first thing you see is the Taihu Lake Memorial Archway. With a classical style and a glazed tiled roof, the archway has the inscription of a poem named The Super View of Taihu Lake. Every Spring Bridge, on the other hand, brings you gorgeous views, but for the best view of the lake, you should get to Turtle-head Peninsula in the Spring Waves.Guangfu Temple is another attraction on the island. The history of the temple goes back to the Six Dynasties. You’ll also see Jiangnan Orchid Garden here, with streams flowing amongst the bamboo trees that populate the garden. Luding Hill and Ten-Mile Fragrant Lake are two other attractions on the island that offer you a chance to appreciate natural beauty.

A boat ride to Fairy Island

Located south of Turtle Head Island is Fairy Island; the distance between the two islands is 2.6 kilometres. This is one of the unique natural attractions in China in that the island has a perfect blend of natural beauty and ancient traditions.The island offers the best views of Huixian Bridge, the memorial archway, Heavenly Street, Matchmaker’s Cave, Lingxiao Palace, and Buddha’s Cave.Tourists can take a ferry from Turtle Head Island, and the journey will be delightfully slow, allowing you enough time to take in the natural scenery that envelops the area – ferries operate from Monday to Friday until 4 PM. On Saturday and Sunday, you can catch the last ferry at 4.30 PM.

How to get to Turtle Head Island

The island is located about 12 miles from Wuxi downtown, and it’s about 1 kilometre away from Li Lake and Li Garden. Tourists visiting the island should first get to the railway station in Wuxi and get a transfer to the island.From Shanghai to Wuxi, it’s about two hours by car, and from Suzhou to Wuxi, it’s about 1 hour by car. If you are getting here from Nanjing, however, it’s a little more than two hours by car. From Hangzhou, you have the longest journey; it’s about three hours by car.
