A stunning example of ancient fortifications in South Korea, the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is not to be missed on your visit and here’s more on what you need to know. 

Fortress History

The history of this site dates to the 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty when King Jeongjo moved his father's tomb here and constructed a fortress and defensive structures around it. Built from 1794 to 1796, this impressive fortress which protected the city features huge walls that extend for almost 6 km. In 1997, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well.

 Fortress Overview

The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is set amidst an area of around 130 hectares with walls spanning 5.74 km that have stood the test of time. The Suwoncheon stream flows through the fortress and at the centre of the site is Paldalsan Mountain. Amongst the key highlights here are the four main gates along with diverse defensive features like firearm bastions, command posts and observation towers, while you can view daily cultural performances too.   

Fortress Attractions

You can catch the Hwaseong Fortress Tourist Trolley to head to some of the most important attractions here including the Hwaseomun and Hwahongmun gates with their defensive structures. Also, make time to visit Hwaseong Haenggung Palace which was a temporary palace and the Suwon Hwaseong Museum. Don’t miss Yeonmudae Post which served as a military observation post and where you can even don traditional military attire and try archery!

Fortress Location

This site can be found in Suwon which is approximately 30 km from Seoul; you can look to take the subway to Suwon Station and from there, catch a bus to Jangan Park which is near the fortress. Those based in serviced apartments Bundang has to offer in its Central Business District can also easily plan excursions to this attraction.
